Such is the fickle nature of the format that Indian Premier League newcomers Gujarat Lions, who were leading the points table during the first half-way mark of the season, now find themselves in a tricky situation to progress to the playoffs.
Their opponents, Kolkata Knight Riders, are sitting comfortably at the second spot in the points table but Gautam Gambhir's men can ill afford a slip-up. A loss will probably make their last group game against table-toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad a must-win one, something which they will want to avoid.
Both sides failed to withstand a batting master class from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers in their respective previous games which would have dented the confidence of their bowlers. The Knight Riders will be vary of the threat posed by Lions openers who can inflict a similar damage. Add Raina to the mix despite his moderate form and you get one of the most intimidating top orders ever.
The Lions, on the other hand, can breathe a little easy as a leg injury looks likely to keep hard-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell out of the game. Besides providing providing lusty blows at the death, the West Indian is also their leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Knight Riders will be hoping to cash in on skipper Gautam Gambhir and Yusuf Pathan's recent form. Robin Uthappa has had three failures on the trot now and will be looking to make amends.
